Timberline Orchestra Disclosure Document 2023-24
Welcome to Timberline Orchestra! I am so happy to have you in class, and look forward to learning and making music together. To be successful in this class, you need to plan to work hard and have fun playing your instrument.
Timberline Middle School follows policies and procedures of Alpine School District. This document will help you to be successful in orchestra this year. After you have reviewed this document carefully with a parent, fill out the google form to receive credit (due Friday, Aug 25, 2023). Please only fill it out ONCE per student! I will need your student’s t-shirt size LC, SA, MA, LA, XLA.
I look forward to getting to know each of you as we work together to create a great musical year!
With the dissolving of textbook funds I am more than ever in need of assistance in my classroom to purchase music and supplies for your students. If you would be willing , you can donate to my classroom foundation, which will purchase supplies for our classroom. I also have an Amazon classroom wish list that I would appreciate help fulfilling, if you feel so inclined. Any help is greatly appreciated!
I am so excited to begin this school year. I am doing everything that I can to prepare myself and the classroom for a great year! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me! I look forward to getting to know you!

SUPPLIES
Orchestra students need to be equipped with the following supplies:
Viola Book 1
Cello Book 1
Bass Book 1
Recommended:
Practice stand for home- strongly recommended!
Metronome and tuner (app works well for this)
Combination lock for instrument locker
Music supplies can be purchased online or at music stores: Summerhays or Day Murray Music (inside Piano Gallery or in Lehi) both on State Street in Orem, Adam Day Violins or Bert Murdock Music in Orem, or select supplies from Amazon (please don’t get instruments there:)
Instrument Rentals and Repairs
Students need a good quality instrument for school and home use. The school has a limited number of instruments, on a first come first serve basis. There are several local music stores that offer instruments to rent or purchase this year (Summerhays, Riverton Music, Day Violins, Bert Murdock). Damages or repairs to instruments because of student negligence or misuse are the responsibility of the student/parent/guardian. Instruments are EXPENSIVE and must be kept in working condition. THIS INCLUDES REPLACING BROKEN STRINGS AND REHAIRING BOWS!
Instrument caution: There are a lot of VSO’s out there (violin shaped objects) which are instruments that may seem very appealing because they are so inexpensive. The money that it will take to get these instruments playing correctly (new quality strings, new pegs, new tailpiece, new bridge) will likely cost more than just investing a little more money in a quality instrument. I would recommend visiting Summerhays Music in Orem. They supply schools with many of their instruments and know what is needed in our schools. They also have great rent to own plans which make getting a good instrument much more affordable. Other local music stores are GREAT and listed above.
GRADING
Orchestra is graded on the following percentages:
Essentials: 50% Practice: 15%
Related Essentials: 25% Participation: 10%
Grading Scale:
100-87.5 A 68.7-43.8 C
87.4-68.8 B 43.7-0 F
Late Work Policy: Late practice assignments will be accepted during the open window for each set of assignments, and can receive a maximum 80% grade. If you need accommodations or special arrangements, including exceptions for time away from school due to sickness, please contact me so that I can make arrangements to work with you!
CANVAS
Many of our class assignments will be accessed and submitted through Canvas. Students will be using a variety of online sources for assignments, but they will all originate and be submitted through Canvas. Grading will be posted in Skyward. Please make it a habit to check canvas weekly for orchestra assignments and Skyward frequently to ensure that your work is turned in and graded.
ONLINE PROGRAMS
We will be using a few websites for at-home practice. Canvas will remain the mode of delivering recording and online assignments to students this year. It will also be the vehicle for turning these assignments in. Essential Elements Interactive will be used weekly at home for practice (beg and int) and recording assignments. Other websites will serve as practical use websites including and are not limited to: Essential Elements Interactive, Musictheory.net, Notesavvy.com. Some of these sites will require your students to set up accounts. There should be NO charge on your end associated with creating these accounts. I will send links to students to set the accounts up. Please assist your student when possible in setting up the accounts, and write down their usernames and passwords in case they should forget.
Classroom rehearsal etiquette (4pts per day- self graded and teacher graded)
Make good choices- Use the Grizzly Guide to help you decide!
Use good manners- Speak when it’s your turn. Keep your instrument and mouth quiet when the teacher is speaking.
Show respect- Show respect to the instruments, show respect to your classmates, show respect to the teacher, show respect to yourself.
Involve yourself- In orchestra we play EVERYDAY. The expectation is to be a part of the rehearsal playing daily. Involve yourself in making friends.
Come prepared- Instrument, folder, music pencil, great working attitude DAILY!
Follow Classroom rules. Failure to follow these classroom rules will result in the following consequences: verbal warning, think-time, call and email home, office referral, changing of citizenship grades.
Weekly Practice/Playing Assignments Students will be assessed weekly through assignments in the following ways:
● Practice Assignments- (Essential Elements Interactive) weekly at-home practice (divided between AT LEAST 3 days) This time CAN include private lesson practice, class practice, assignments/recordings
● Theory assignments ● Recordings/ playing checks ● Guided Listening Logs
Written Assignments/Reports
Quarterly Concerts
Orchestra is a performance based class. Final assessment each quarter will conclude with all classes participating in a concert demonstrating what they have learned. It is expected that all students will participate in the concerts, as a large part of their grade depends on their preparedness and participation in the event.
Exceptions to students missing concerts include: sickness prohibiting participation or death in the family. In the case that a student must miss for one of these two reasons, I must be notified by email BEFORE the concert. If your family will miss the concert due to a family vacation/trip, I must be notified at least two weeks in advance in order for a make-up assignment to be given and accepted. A make-up assignment will be difficult, so try to plan around these events. If you find yourself in this situation, please set up a time to meet with me to get a “concert make-up assignment”. Proper concert attire must be worn.
Concert Attire: All students will receive an orchestra shirt (google form) for casual performances and for Spirit Fridays! Concert black will be worn for live stage concerts. Check the schedule ‘notes’ for what to wear to each event.
Men- black slacks, black button down shirts or black polo, black socks and black shoes
Women: Concert Black: black dresses, or black blouse, black skirts or slacks, black tights or socks, black shoes (skirts must be below the knee; shoulders covered).
